How Do I Clean My Wooden Venetian Blinds?

The easiest way to keep your wooden Venetian blinds clean, dust free and looking their best all year round is to give them a quick flick over with a soft duster or feather duster as part of your regular weekly housework. Did you know regularly dusting your wooden blinds improves the air quality in your home and can reduce allergens in the air? If you tend to leave your blind in the same position and don’t move it regularly, it can gather quite a layer of dust on.

A quick weekly dust:

  • With the blind fully lowered, place the slats in the closed position and wipe or dust the blinds from top to bottom, working your way from one side to the other.
  • Next open the slats and close the other way so you can see the other side of the slats. Repeat the wiping/dusting as before but instead go from bottom to top.

Add an expert dust:

  • Also open the slats horizontally and wipe or dust from the middle of each slat towards the outer edge on one side, then the same from the middle to the other end, working your way down the slats.
  • If you’re a fan of household gadgets, there’s a specialist blind cleaning tool that is like a 3-pronged dusting fork to help you clean quicker!

My Wooden blinds are more than just dusty?

If regular cleaning isn’t for you and you’re more of a ‘every so often’ fan, or you’ve just moved into a house with some very dirty blinds then fear not, here’s what you need to do to get them shiny again!

If your blind is generally clean but just has a few dirty spots or patches, grab a damp cloth and spot clean them only applying as much pressure as you need to get rid of the mark so you don’t affect the varnish or paint and leave a new one in its place!

If it’s grubby all over, then first go over it with a duster or soft cloth as above to remove any surface dust and then:

  • With your blind fully lowered and the slats closed, grab a soft damp cloth (not wet/dripping) and wipe from top to bottom working your way across the blind.
  • Make sure you rinse out and wring your cloth regularly so you’re using clean water and not just moving the dirt around the blind. You don’t want your cloth to be dripping as standing water left after cleaning could damage the blind.
  • Open the slats and close the other way around so you are seeing the other side and repeat your damp wiping but this time from bottom to top.
  • You then want to clean the individual slats; set them into the horizontal position and with your damp cloth wipe them from the middle to one end, and from the middle to the other end. Work your way down each slat.
  • Along with avoiding standing water, take extra care to not get the end of the slats wet as these are often un-varnished so will suck up any water, they get which is not ideal. If you can see any water left on the blinds when you’ve finished, just wipe off gently with a dry cloth.
