Your Guide to Curtain Styles

Woman Opening Curtains

Curtains are a classic choice of window dressing, both practical and decorative, and can have a transformative effect on any room if well-chosen, which is what we’re here to help with!

From the latest fabrics using bold prints, modern colour palettes and abstract plant patterns to the timeless classic chic look, we have fabric and style options to suit every taste. It’s all about choosing the right window dressing for you, whether it’s blinds, curtains or both. If you’re considering curtains, here’s our lowdown on the different types available to create the look you want.

Eyelets

Eyelet curtains can only be used on curtain poles and give a clean, modern look. As this curtain design doesn’t use much fabric, it makes them very cost effective and they hang very straight, maximising the light in the room. For an extra flourish, you can even match the eyelet rings to your curtain pole.

Pencil Pleat

Pencil pleat is the most popular style of curtain heading and also friendly on the pocket. They are normally three rows of string threaded through the heading with the pleats gathered evenly across the top of the curtain using these drawstrings. You have three choices of hook position to hang the curtains and they can be used on all types of curtain poles or tracks. These are the most common choice to use with a pelmet and are suitable for most styles of rooms.

Pinch Pleat

For a more tailored finish than the pencil pleat, you could choose a pinched pleat. These have groups of structured pleats separated between flat sections of the fabric, stacking neatly when the curtains are opened as the flat space in between folds in the middle.

Now I Know The Style, Do I Want My Curtains Lined Or Unlined?

If you’re dressing a bedroom, you really want to include a blackout lining for your curtains which, along with darkening the room, will also help prevent the curtain fabric from fading. If your house can be a bit nippy in the winter months, consider using a thermal lining (or combine the two!) which will act as a draught excluder and will keep the room warmer.

Unlined curtains, normally in lighter fabrics such as sheers or linen, have an informal style and work well when combined with a blind.
